Some 250 participants from small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam attended a two-day seminar where European and ASEAN speakers gave an overview on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and their benefits to SMEs. In parallel, a sideline exhibition showcasing IP-related products and services was organised. In addition to IP-related institutions and governmental agencies, Remy Martin and Baker&McKenzie participated at the exhibition.
Dr Markus Cornaro, Ambassador-Head of EC Delegation to Vietnam, Mr Bui Manh Hai, Vice Minister of Science and Technology and Mr Alain Cany, EUROCHAM Chairman, addressed the opening of this event.
“Intellectual property rights have long been championed by the EU. Adequate protection in both law and practice of IPR is vital and highly beneficial to Vietnamese small & medium sized enterprises. Unfortunately, many SMEs do not always realise the full benefits and the added value they could get from IPR protection”, said Dr Markus Cornaro – Ambassador/ Head of the EC Delegation to Vietnam during his opening speech.
The seminar gathered European and ASEAN experts who shared their respective areas of expertise with the participants. Among the topics discussed were patents, trade marks, industrial designs, geographical indications, copyrights, collecting societies and IPR enforcement. The International Federation of Spirits Producers (IFSP), an industry particularly prone to IP violations, presented the importance of a well-functioning IPR enforcement.
