Workshop on “Production of Thai Silk under Geographical Indications (GIs), 13-14 March 2007, Bangkok

A two-day workshop on silk protection and production under Geographical Indications (GIs) was organised in Bangkok by the Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture, Thai Ministry of  Agriculture. This event gathered 150 participants from the Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture, the Department of Intellectual Property, provincial offices of agriculture, provincial offices of commerce, Thai silk producers, Thailand Textile Association and other agencies. This event follows workshops held last year in provinces of Khon Kaen (link), Chiangmai (link) and Lamphun (link) and focused on the follow up of the identification of potential GIs regarding silk across the country as well as the progress of the drafting of the GI national applications for silk products.

During the meeting, Stephane Passeri, ECAP II Programme Administrator, spoke about the potential for and protection of Geographical indications in the world market.

The highlight of the seminar was a brain-storming on problems and obstacles encountered by 12 centres during the preparation of GI applications.  These centres were selected from 21 nation-wide centres to join the pilot project of GI applications. The first pilot GI applications for silk should be filed with the Department of Intellectual Property in the first half of 2007. The “Brocade Lamphun Thai Silk” could be among the first applications.
