“Geographical Indications, A Land of Opportunities,” Seminar and Exhibition 28 April 2005, Bangkok

This event selected by the Thai government as Thailand’s contribution to the World IP Day drew a packed crowd of 300 participants including producers, lawyers, academics and officials involved in the Geographical Indications (GIs) system in Thailand. For the public seminar, ECAP II invited a panel of distinguished GI experts to give presentations on various aspects of GIs. At the seminar venue, a parallel exhibition of European GI products and potential Thai GI products also attracted a big turnout of visitors.

“The seminar motivates us participants to apply for GIS for our local products such as Suratthani Oyster,” a participant wrote in the seminar feedback form. “This event should be followed up by training on GIs for producers, farmers and growers,” said another. On the whole, most participants said they returned home with handful of knowledge and information about GIs.

In the days before the seminar, the European and Indonesian GI experts had held several work shops with Thai agencies involved including the GIs commission, the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court.

Speakers and hosts are pictured here at the opening of the seminar and exhibition on “Geographical Indications, A Land Of Opportunities,” in Bangkok on 28 April 2005.
