Two EPO experts, Mr Bernard Chaumeron and Dr Tanneke Laffargue-Haak jointly conducted a five-day training to staff of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) This ECAPII-sponsored training dealt with specific issues ranging from review of patentability criteria and case law, International Patent Classification (IPC), assessment of non unity of invention, introduction to the process of search and examination, allowability of amendments and corrections in patent specifications.
The training needs from the IPOS resulted from the recent changes in Singapore’s patent law. Mr Chaumeron, French national, is an EPO examiner in the field of information storage technology. He is also a trainer and is involved in the classification and documentation matters. Ms Tanneke Laffargue-Haak obtained a PhD in Pharmacology and had worked for Intervet International in Boxmeer, where she was responsible for the marketing authorizations of anti-inflammatory drugs for small and large animals. She joined the EPO since 1998 and had worked in the field of pharmacy.
In their mission report, the two experts said they were impressed with the trainees’ enthusiasm to learn and share. Mr Chaumeron noted that a certain number of trainees were particularly well prepared, and showed that they had carefully reviewed the course materials. “I had been informed directly by some trainees that the different presentations were very useful to them. They cited as example: assessment of unity of invention, allocation of IPC classes, assessment of allowability of amendments and corrections, ” he said.
