Over 70 judges, prosecutors, police officers and civil servant investigators from across Indonesia attended a two-day seminar on “Criminal versus Civil Remedies”, jointly organised by ECAP II, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights (DGIPR) and the European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia.
HE Mr Hamid Awaludin, Minister of Law and Human Rights, Mr. Andreas Julin, Head of Trade and Economic Section of the EC Delegation to Indonesia and Mr. Theodoor Bakker, Vice Chairman of the European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia opened this event. “Intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement is a wide subject matter which typically involves the competencies from a multitude of government agencies. As such, it represents a national and international co-ordination challenge for Indonesia.”, said Mr. Andreas Julin.
During the seminar, European and Indonesian experts gave an overview on the IPR enforcement systems in Europe and Indonesia. They also shared their experiences in collection and presentation of evidences, court procedures and deterrents. In addition, private IP right holders and federations such as Indonesia Intellectual Property Society (IIPS), the International Federation of Phonographic Industries (IFPI) and Steering Committee of Indonesian Society Anti-Counterfeiting (MIAP) actively participated in the seminar to give their views on IPR enforcement and to present their initiatives in combating infringed products. The discussion on best practices on IPR enforcement and efficient co-operation between law enforcement agencies and IP right holders was the focal point of the second day. The experience of an IPR enforcement system by a specialised IP court was also introduced by the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court (CIPITC) of Thailand.
