Over 250 participants, government officials, producers, traders, academics, lawyers and consultants turned up at this forum to hear speakers from Indonesia, Portugal, France and Thailand sharing their experiences on administration, management and marketing of GI products. In parallel with the public seminar was organised an exhibition showcasing GI and potential GI products from Indonesia, Asia and Europe.
Under the GI “twinning” initiative, European GI producers exchanged experience with Indonesia producers on effective application of GIs with regard to both quality control and marketing. Indonesian producers joining this initiative included Lasem batik and pewarna alami, Kintamani coffee, Cilembu sweet potatoes, Yogyakarta durian, Lampung soy bean and pineapple, Sumatra rubber, Toraja coffee, Jambi cacao, Palembang Songket and Mataram Pearl.
Most of participants found the seminar to be very informative and useful for their professions, and desired to have more seminars on this topic, as GI protection is a new IPR concept in Indonesia. “We hope that in the future, similar events will be held in Indonesia to raise the awareness of Indonesians on the importance of protecting industrial/commercial IPR”, wrote a participant in a feedback form.
Participants reaffirmed the importance for Indonesia authorities to finalise the implementing regulation on GIs in 2006.
