Study Visit/training on Geographical Indications (GIs), 20-25 August 2007, Thailand

ECAP II, in co-operation with the Thai Department of Intellectual Property, the Cambodian Intellectual Property Department, the Department of Intellectual Property Standardization and Metrology (DIP) of Lao PDR and the French Development Agency (AFD) jointly organised a study visit/training on Geographical Indications in Thailand.

This event focused on the application/registration procedures of GIs and the European experience.

From 20 to 25 August 2007, Cambodian and Lao delegates involved in the development of GI systems in their respective country experienced the Thai and the European GI systems.  Delegates participated to a one-day seminar conducted by Ms. Ana Soeiro, GI expert from Portugal.  The latter also accompanied the joint delegation during the rest of week to provide advices on the establishment of a GI system as well on GI registration, management and control as well as regarding the possible preparation of future application in Europe.

Meetings with the Thai GI officials and producers including Sriracha Pineapple and Doi Chaang Coffee were also organised in order to exchange experience on how to settle and implement a GI system. On-site visits during five days allowed Lao and Cambodian delegates to visit Thai GI Products’ production areas such as Doi Tung Coffee, Nanglae and Chiangrai Phulae Pineapples (in Chiangrai Province) and Nakornchaisri Pomelo (in Nakornpathom) or Lamphun Brocade Thai Silk (in Lamphun Province) and share producers’ and other stake-holders’ experiences.
