Seminar/Exhibition and Consultation on Geographical Indications (GIs), 1-3 October 2007, Phnom Penh

A seminar on Geographical Indications (GIs) was jointly organised in Phnom Penh from 1-2 October 2007 by ECAP II and the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) of the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia in co-operation with the French Development Agency (AFD). The seminar was jointly opened by Mr. Rafael Dochao Moreno, Chargé d’Affaires a.i, Delegation of the European Commission to Cambodia and H.E Mao Thora, Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Commerce.
The seminar was organised with an aim at disseminating knowledge of ASEAN and European GI systems to producers and other interested parties in Cambodia to understand better how to protect and promote national products through GIs. Besides international experts from Indonesia, Thailand and Europe presenting the GI system in their countries, Cambodian Officials and stake-holders presented updated information on the Cambodian Draft legislation on Geographical Indications as well as Cambodian products leading the way for possible future GI applications.
In addition to the two-day seminar was also held an exhibition showcasing GI products from Thailand and Europe as well as potential GI products from Indonesia and Cambodia. Among the potential GI products from Cambodia joining the exhibition were Prahok Siem Reap, fish sauce and pepper from Kampot, silk from Steng reng Province, silk from Khmer Silk Villages, coffee from Ratnakiri Province, palm sugar from Kampong Speu, rice and orange from Battambang Province and Neang Om Rice from Kratie Province.
During consultation sessions chaired by H.E Mao Thora and organised on 3 October 2007 at the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, GI experts from Indonesia, Thailand and Europe (France and Portugal) provided advice to the Cambodian Government and stake-holders in the finalisation of the Cambodian draft GI law as well as regarding the development, management and control of future GIs in Cambodia.
